چکیده

Introduction Despite the predominance of invertebrate phyla in the animal kingdom, relatively very little is known about the mechanisms whereby invertebrates activate xenobiotics to toxic products, especially in organisms other than insects. Aquatic invertebrates are particularly susceptible to contaminant exposure and, to predict the risk to these organisms it is important to gain an understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of xenobiotic metabolism and toxicity.

Marine Invertebrate Xenobiotic-Activated Nuclear Receptors: Their Application as Sensor Elements in High-Throughput Bioassays for Marine Bioactive Compounds

Developing high-throughput assays to screen marine extracts for bioactive compounds presents both conceptual and technical challenges. One major challenge is to develop assays that have well-grounded ecological and evolutionary rationales. In this review we propose that a specific group of ligand-activated transcription factors are particularly well-suited to act as sensors in such bioassays. M...

Prevalence and Mechanisms of Dynamic Chemical Defenses in Tropical Sponges

Sponges and other sessile invertebrates are lacking behavioural escape or defense mechanisms and rely therefore on morphological or chemical defenses. Studies from terrestrial systems and marine algae demonstrated facultative defenses like induction and activation to be common, suggesting that sessile marine organisms also evolved mechanisms to increase the efficiency of their chemical defense....

Accelerated Cytotoxicity Mechanism Screening

By discovering how chemical compounds/xenobiotics cytotoxicity is affected when their metabolic pathways are inhibited or activated, the metabolic pathways that activate versus detoxify chemical compound can be identified. Reactive metabolites contributing to cytotoxicity can also be identified. In this lecture, the pretreatment of inhibitors and activators of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes as...

P 93: The Role of Marine Compounds in Neuroinflammation

Extensive research in the last decade has defined that most chronic diseases display dysregulation of multiple cell signaling pathways that have been linked to inflammation. Neuroinflammation is reaction of living nervous tissue to injury. It may be initiated in response to neurological disease. Including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites and autoimmunity. The natural compoun...

Nuclear hormone receptors: Roles of xenobiotic detoxification and sterol homeostasis in healthy aging.

Health during aging can be improved by genetic, dietary and pharmacological interventions. Many of these increase resistance to various stressors, including xenobiotics. Up-regulation of xenobiotic detoxification genes is a transcriptomic signature shared by long-lived nematodes, flies and mice, suggesting that protection of cells from toxicity of xenobiotics may contribute to longevity. Expres...
